The World Will Be Watching (The Hunger Games)

The Hunger Games opens tonight at midnight, and guess who’s going to be there? Yes, your favorite die-hard Hunger Games Geek in all of my Hunger Games glory (see: my last shirt and pin post). The anticipation surrounding this movie is intense, with a wave of positive reviews following the first few premieres. There are a lot of rumors and gossip that lead up to a movie’s opening, and a lot of expectations that are quickly built up following the first showings.

So, what are the rumors? What am I anticipating? What am I hoping for?

(HOPE) Jennifer Lawrence being a bad-ass – She learned archery from an Olympian, went rock climbing on a daily basis and did some intense workouts to prep for the role. She’s got to be awesome.

(EXPECTATION) Katniss and Cinna’s relationship – Rumor has it that they have some of the best chemistry on screen of anyone in the cast. When Lenny Kravitz was cast, he and Lawrence were already friends from Lawrence working with his daughter (Zoe Kravitz) in X-Men: First Class. They were already plenty comfortable with each other before filming even started, and it should make for an incredibly touching on-screen friendship.

(EXPECTATION) Effie Trinkett’s hair – Have you seen the trailer and photos? I am expecting it to look like a box of Crayola Crayons vomited all over her, or I will be incredibly disappointed.

(RUMOR) Katniss and Peeta’s relationship – Apparently it isn’t quite as confusing and intense as the book describes it. I’m worried that this will kind of ruin the momentum of the movie, but I can understand them not wanting it to be “Twilight”-y with the teenage love stories.

(RUMOR) Book-Movie Faithfulness – There have been consistent sound bites about the movie being one of the most faithful book-to-movie adaptations in recent memory. I am a stickler for following the book, but I understand (reasonable) compromises to streamline the story.

(HOPE) Katniss’ dress – It was a huge deal in the book. They didn’t release any photos of what Katniss looks like when she’s actually on fire. I will take this moment to stake my claim and a girl and say that I hope that on-fire dress effect is as fabulous as it is in my head.

(HOPE) Shooting Arrow at the Judges – There was a very impressive moment in the trailer where Katniss hits the exact target in the training area. That’s cool, but I really hope you get some of her sass and they didn’t cut out her shooting an arrow at the Judges table to get their attention. It’s a little detail, but I think it tremendously defines her as a character.

(EXPECTATION) Toned-down violence – If you’ve read the books, you know just how bloody and violent the Hunger Games actually get. It’s pretty gruesome, and would have absolutely ended up with an R-rating if they go all out. I really hope they can find a balance between sugar-coating the killing and the absolute viciousness of the games.

I’m off to a 12:11AM showing of The Hunger Games, and will dutifully report back in the morning. Will it be amazing? Will Jennifer Lawrence kick as much ass as I hope she’s going to? Will Elizabeth Banks have at least three different colors of eyelashes? I’ll let you know once The Games begin.

P.S. A Last-Minute Confession: Today’s Woot.com shirt was a “Hungry Hungry Hunger Games” shirt. I have no self-control.
